107.9 U Radio Manila

History

In 2006, an unknown radio station set-off broadcasting in Metro Manila with the power of 500 watts on 107.9MHz FM. The station played nothing but underground club music… No call sign. No jocks. Just a stinger saying "You're tuned to Underground Radio", as well as a recorded female voiceover mentioning a mobile number that served as a request line in between queues.

But with hundreds of text messages being received daily and with the station being the hot topic on dozens of blog sites on the internet, the station’s movers and shakers knew that the people were tuning in.

And so they took it to the next level…

In April 2007, the pirate station temporarily ceased transmission so it could obtain all the necessary broadcast permits from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC).

And finally… In June 2007, the station invaded the airwaves again with its new name… 107.9 U Radio.

Then in July 2008, the permit issued by the NTC expired and the station was denied re-issuance of its permit… for unknown reasons.

Well, an NTC permit did not stop them from first broadcasting back in 2006, and it sure as hell didn’t stop them then…

Two months later, on October 2, 2008, U Radio’s broadcast facility was raided by the NTC and accompanying police force for broadcasting with an expired permit. The main transmitter and STL system were confiscated.

After a few months, U Radio was finally granted another permit to broadcast by the NTC.

A stronger and improved U Radio 107.9 once again commenced broadcast of the newest and purest unadulterated UnderGround dance club music 24/7…

And the rest, as they say, is history…
